GA Application Instructions
You must complete and submit this application if you wish to be considered for a
College of Education graduate assistantship. Depending on the nature of various
program responsibilities and individual backgrounds, positions vary among graduate
assistantships(GA generally means being assigned to assist with research, scholarship
or instructional duties ), research assistantships(RA assigned to assist with research and scholarship
on grant-related activities), teaching assistantships(TA assisting
faculty primarily
in their instructional roles), and graduate part-time instructorships(GPTI
serving
as instructor of record for selected undergraduate-level courses).
Being selected to serve in any kind of graduate assistant capacity requires working
20-hours/per week during the Fall and Spring terms while, at the same time, maintaining
full time graduate student status (i.e., taking 9 SCH of course work). With few
exceptions, the 20-hour/week employment position necessitates that each graduate
assistant be available for assignment between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through
Friday. Thus, you may not be employed as
a graduate assistant if you have other employment or personal obligations that conflict
with this expectation.
Summer graduate assistantships in the College of Education are only offered if resources
are available, and these appointments (if any) are generally made in April. Those
selected for summer appointments typically come from the group of current graduate
assistants who are employed during the prior Spring term and who have been selected
for reemployment in the subsequent Fall term.
When making selections for graduate assistantships, the College of Education attempts
to maintain a balance in terms of program and departmental representation. Greater
emphasis is also placed on selecting graduate students admitted for doctoral study.
Finally, all applicants for graduate assistantships are suggested
to apply for need-based federal financial assistance. Go to the
link for FAFSA. Although financial need
will not be used as a factor in determining those who are selected for assistantships,
the College of Education is able to employ a
larger number of graduate students if a portion of the employment expense is offset
with federal financial assistance.
